Temporary Closure of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel
Light rail is coming to downtown Seattle. In order to prepare the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel for use by both buses and trains, the tunnel must be closed for up to two years beginning Sept. 24, 2005. During the tunnel closure, buses that currently operate in the tunnel will be shifted to surface streets. Work inside the tunnel includes: replacing the existing rails; lowering the trackbed for easier boarding; upgrading the electrical and mechanical systems; improving the fire and safety systems; and installing a state-of-the-art communications system. The tunnel will re-open for buses no later than September 2007. Light rail trains will join buses in the tunnel when the rail line is running in 2009. For more information about the project, visit www.seattletunnel.org.
